Homeless Shelter Needs and Volunteering Info

Our every night shelter for the homeless, which is right in our church, has now been running for a month and will continue every night until March 31. We are averaging 20 people a night, with men, women, and at times, children. The women and children sleep in classrooms and the men sleep in our worship area. We can always use supplies and volunteers. If you would like to help out, here are some ways:

Supplies we always need:

Lysol, hand sanitizer, large trash bags (39 or 42 gallon and as thick as possible), coffee, sugar, 8oz cups, spoons, toilet paper, paper towels, paper plates, dish rags, bottled water, packs of Emergen-C vitamins, and nutri-grain bars. You’d be amazed at how quickly we go through supplies. We don’t need random items of food or clothes at this time.

Volunteer Opportunities:

If you would like to bring dinner, please plan on bringing enough for 25 people. After a cold day outside, a hot meal is greatly appreciated. Soup, chili, spaghetti, and things like that are easy. Please note, we do not have a stove or oven at the church, so the food needs to be cooked before coming to the church.  We do have a refrigerator and microwave (we’re not totally the Flintstones, but close). If you would like to schedule bringing a meal, please email Lisa Nielsen at moc.oohaynull@1102nesleinasiL and she’ll get you on the schedule.

We also need people to help with checking in our guests each night. This person volunteers from 7-10 p.m. and helps our guests get their stuff in overnight bins, gets the rooms ready for the night, and helps serve meals when necessary. This is a great chance to volunteer for those who can’t spend the night.

Each night we need volunteers who spend the night.  These people stay from 7 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.  They also help with check in and serving dinner when needed.  This position makes sure everyone is safe at night.  Once everyone goes to sleep, it’s a great chance to get work done, read, etc. There is always one volunteer awake, but volunteers can take turns sleeping, so you will get some sleep. You won’t get a lot of sleep, but you’ll have sweet dreams knowing you are making a real difference in the world.

We will have someone to show you the ropes so you don’t have to worry about coming to the shelter and not knowing what to do. If you would like to volunteer as a check-in or overnight person, please email Steve Smith at moc.oohaynull@55htimssws and he’ll help you find a date that works.

Giving financially:

If you would like to help financially, please click the “Support Us” button at the top of this page and you can give by PayPal or Credit Card. We can always use financial help and we promise to use every single penny wisely.

If you have any other questions, please let us know. You can email Pastor Scott at moc.liamgnull@ottocsrelletyrots

Thanks again for helping. You will realize after you volunteer that you are the one who got the benefit out of it.  It will truly change your life! Our church is right off I-40 and Peter’s Creek Parkway in Winston Salem. There’s a map on this page.
