On Sunday we talked about being rich.
How would you answer the question: Are you rich? Do you define richness by how much money you have, or by something else? As we talked about on Sunday, if you define your richness by how big your checking account is, you will never be happy. You will never think you have enough.
Did it surprise you to learn that Jesus talked more about money than about heaven and hell combined. Why do you think Jesus, who had no money, talk so much about it? Read Matthew 6:1-4 and 19-24. In verse 24, Jesus talks about “serving money”. Have you ever done that? What did it look like? How did it work out for you?
What are some specific things you could do in your life right now to be more generous? Write them down. How could you be more generous with your heart? With forgiveness? With friendship? With your money? After you have written these things down, do one of them each day this week.
How cool is this: According to Jesus, the more we give away, the richer we are. We’re rich because it draws us closer to God. We are rich because we worship a God who has promised to be with us always. Who has promised to hear all of our prayers. Who is always working in our lives. Who will give us wisdom when we ask for it. I could go on and on. If we really want to be rich, we’ve got to learn to let go.
Here’s a simple prayer to pray each day this week: God, help me to worship you and not anything else. Help me to store up my treasures in heaven, and to give you all of my heart. Help me to be a generous person with everything I am, and everything I have. Most of all God, help me to trust in your for everything I need. Amen.
