I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. So, I’m one of those annoying people who thinks Texas is awesome and won’t hesitate to tell you. I graduated from The University of Texas at Austin (Hook ‘Em Horns) with my BBA and MBA, and then went to work for a Wall Street firm for several years. While I loved the work and made tons of money, I felt that God was calling me to something different. This was quite a shock to me because my family was not very active in church while I was growing up. In fact, most of my friends thought I was kidding when I told them I was going to be a minister. When I say “kidding”, I mean they laughed in my face and thought it was the best joke they’d heard in a long time.
I eventually went to Duke Divinity School and started in the ministry. I have never looked back. I love being a minister because I get to be a part of peoples’ lives during the best of times and the worst of times. Since I didn’t grow up in the church, I can easily relate to people who have never been to church or who haven’t felt very connected to church. I think church should be a place where we have fun and make a real difference. I love helping other people and want New Story Church to always focus on helping others.
One thing you’ll find soon after you meet me is that I love living. I’m serious only when necessary, and I’d way rather laugh than cry (although I’ve done plenty of each). The videos on this web-site were my idea, so if you love them, thanks. If you hate them, well….
My own story is one that is filled with great joy and deep sadness. The joys of my life are my three kids, ages 11, 7, and 6. I love being a dad (except when their rooms look like a bomb went off in them). I was married for 15 years, but now I’m a widower. My wife died several months ago after a long struggle with a terrible disease. It’s been hard, but now I’ve been able to see how God has been with me and my family through it all. So, when I say I understand loss, and sadness, and doubt, I mean it.
My favorite things to do are be outside, hike, camp, work out, read, and do sidewalk art (just kidding on that last one). I’m excited about starting New Story Church because I know there are so many people who are looking for something different: A place to worship God without being formal. A place to laugh while learning. A place to help others while growing ourselves. A place for a New Story. I hope you’ll come join us. I look forward to getting to know you better.
