If you’ve ever had anything to do with New Story Church you know two things about us: 1) We love telling people about a God who loves them, and (2) we love reaching out to our community and helping those in need. In the 18 months that we’ve been in our building we have packed over 14,000 meals, had a homeless shelter right in our church, hosted hundreds of recovery meetings, had several free dental clinics, opened a clothes closet, and much more. We love helping people have a New Story.
This is why we are so excited to be opening a missions outpost in Waughtown, an area that is in desperate need of a New Story. A couple of months ago we were approached by the Prodigals community about partnering with them to bring a New Story to their area. Then, last month, when Prodigals knew they weren’t going to be able to continue operating, they approached us about taking over their buildings, so that we could do many of the same ministries there that we are doing now in the Peter’s Creek area.
After tons of prayer by a lot of people, we have decided that God is leading us in this direction. One of the biggest reasons is that if we don’t do this, 15 of the Prodigals guys will be out on the street on September 1. Since almost all of them are active at New Story, it would go against everything we believe not to help take care of them. Additionally, the more time we spend in Waughtown, the more we see the great need over there. There is incredible poverty and a lot of hungry people. We know that we can help them have a New Story.
So, beginning September 1 we will open New Story Waughtown. It’s not going to be a campus of our church. It’s going to begin as a missions outpost. We will continue to house the guys from the Prodigals community who are working on their transition. We will have counselors over there (and here) that will help those who are in need. We will begin having cookouts for the community to feed the hungry and show people that New Story Church has come to the community to serve. Eventually we may have a clothes closet and food pantry over there. Right from the start we’ll have lots of opportunities to make the property look better and be more welcoming. And of course, we’ll tell everyone we can about how much Jesus loves them no matter who they are or what they’ve done.
We won’t start worship services over there immediately. But if our presence in that community grows, we envision having a Monday night worship service there at some point in the future. What will it look like? Who knows? But it will fit the community while having a New Story flare. We’ll work on developing leaders from that area to help us with all that we do there. We’ll also use people from our Peter’s Creek campus who are ready and willing to step up into leadership roles at Waughtown.
Is this all going to go smoothly? I doubt it. There will be people who are against what we are doing. There are always people who are more interested in tearing down than building up. Satan certainly won’t be happy. But we’re New Story Church. We know that God will be with us every step of the way, just like God has been since the day we started New Story. Just imagine the people in Waughtown who will have a New Story because of what we do over there. And you get to be a part of it! You get to be a part of helping people change their lives for the better, a part of hungry people being fed, a part of people in recovery staying clean for another day. Wow! It’s going to be awesome.
We’ll have many more details as we move forward and we’ll keep you informed every step of the way. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. I’m sure many of you are wondering what you can do to help. First, pray. Like crazy. Then begin thinking how God might use you in this new area. Please share this with everyone you know who would like to help or who might benefit from our ministry in Waughtown.
If you’re not currently part of New Story and would like to come help us make a difference in the community, we’d love for you to join us. We’re New Story Church and we will always live out our faith by helping people who need a New Story.
